The Japanese Martial Art Grappling system, Judo, was created in Japan in 1882 by Jigoro Kano. The objective is to take down an opponent with either a throw or takedown, get him to the ground and immobilize, subdue, or submit an opponent with a joint lock or choke.
Here at Excel Jiu Jitsu MMA & Fitness Oceanside, we incorporate the lessons in Judo, the sister Art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), to better fit the sport of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). MMA fighters will use No-Gi Judo from the clinch position, to take down an opponent to the canvas to gain advantage.
Because fights start from the standing position, Jiu-Jitsu fighters will learn Judo to get the fight to the ground. Once to the ground, the Jiu Jitsu, the BJJ competitor, will utilize submissions or submission holds, to get the opponent to ‘Tap Out’.
If you are new to Martial Arts and competition is not your thing, learning Judo is an outstanding way to get fit, get into shape and gain self defense skills along the way. Judo workouts incorporate a lot of movement and exercise to help build the body, mind, and spirit. So, if you are a beginner to Judo, no problem…we will take you through every step of the way to make sure your experience is a positive one.
Learn the ‘Gentle Way’
The Judoka, Judo practitioner, gains skills by randori or sparring and many hours of repetitive drilling, Uchi Komi, of body movements and Judo techniques. The idea behind the ‘Gentle Way’ is to take the opponents energy and use it against him. Once the Judo Martial Artist grabs you, watch out! You better have your pilots license because you are going for a ride in the air.
Once clinched, the Judoka is a master of grips and will use off-balancing techniques to thwart an opponent. Nage Waza, throwing techniques will include throws, sweeps, trips, and leg attacks.
The Judo classes at Excel Jiu Jitsu MMA Oceanside, are designed and geared toward the beginning Judo student. If you are new to the Art of Judo, you will find that the techniques are fun and exciting. As a beginner, you will learn how to fall properly, and how to posture and flow with the energy to better absorb the impact of a throw. The body will toughen up, get Judo tough, and being ‘thrown’ will not be a big deal.
Benefits of Judo will include becoming much more confident from the standing grappling position. Gaining self-defense and eventually mastering subduing an opponent. Life lessons are also built into the Oceanside Judo program.
So, let’s go, let’s LEARN JUDO!
