As a parent I can honestly say that I am impressed and continue to be impressed everyday by Excel Jiu Jitsu MMA & Fitness. My daughter Laurynn has been training at Excel Jiu Jitsu for a few years now and she loves it. Laurynn has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and wanted to expand her martial arts background. We found Excel Jiu Jitsu and couldn’t be happier. Laurynn trains there six days a week two to three times a day (her home away from home!!). She has also started competing and has done very well. Thanks to the awesome coaches in her corner.

As soon as you arrive you are drawn in. I am truly amazed at ALL the coaches’ expertise. They really take the time to work with each and every student. They teach structure, discipline and integrity. No matter what level you are or how old you are each student is given the same opportunity to EXCEL. Coaches and students constantly encourage each other. One thing that I really appreciate is that the coaches get right in there with the students and not just coach them from the side.

I really appreciate that they offer a well rounded curriculum with training in not only Jiu-Jitsu, but boxing, fitness, striking, and MMA. There is something for everyone.

I have to thank each and every coach that has really impacted Laurynn’s training and dedication.

Studying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Excel Jiu Jitsu & MMA has truly been a life altering experience. Instructors at Excel focus on excellent technique whether it is for self-defense, competition training, or just to get in shape. Everyone at Excel Jiu Jitsu works hard but safety and respect are the paramount aspects of the training environment.

I recently scheduled a private session with Michio Grubbs to work on an aspect (half guard) of my game. After working on the half guard and integrating it into my overall Jiu Jitsu, I find myself getting more confident at working this technique in a real match. Thanks to Michio and all the instructors at this school my game has sky-rocketed and I realize that I have unlimited potential in this sport. It truly is an honor to train at such a quality school.

In my quest to find a BJJ school to affiliate with, I made it a point to spend some time researching the background and legitimacy of the schools in my area since North County has become such a hot spot for “ticky-tacky” Martial Arts schools trying to make a quick buck on unsuspecting clients. I also treasure my hard earned cash as most people do, and that is why I chose Excel Jiu Jitsu.

The instruction and program at this school is phenomenal which is easily observed in the skill level of the purple and blue belts at this school. If you want a workout come in and roll with a 4 striped white belt; if you want to test your choke defense then come in and roll with a blue belt. And if you want to be humbled come in and roll with any of Excel’s purple belts.

In my opinion that is the sign of a well skilled instructor and staff. The quality of the students is a reflection of the blood and sweat of the people who have trained them. The lead instructor at this school is Michio Grubbs and is one the most knowledgeable, genuine and humble people I know in this profession; Michio is also an active competitor, which is even more impressive.

As they say, every school has its own personality and this school displays a strong team/ family type persona. It’s a school for the curious, the hobbyist, the competitor, the fitness fanatic and even the 40’s plus club. Everyone here shares a passion for the art of jiu jitsu and is always willing to help and teach all new comers. There are no bullies or obsessed pseudo MMA douche-bags, just the real thing, professional combat athletes that know when to turn it on and off.

As a former grunt Corpsman, former law enforcement and current diplomatic security-medic overseas. I take my physical fitness seriously as my livelihood depends on it. I work in a high threat environment that requires my mind and body to be focused, healthy and confident. And training at Excel Jiu Jitsu provides me with the perfect environment to workout, learn new skills and challenge myself every time.
Thank you Excel!

I was first introduced to Jiu Jitsu by my son, he would set up mats in the garage and have some friends over. I couldn’t resist the urge to roll with them, I am heavier than my son so how bad could this go? His Jiu Jitsu was so effective and efficient that I was saying hey that hurts within the first couple minutes! He laughed and said “I know”. I joined a gym that offered Jiu Jitsu the next day.

My intent was to get better, build cardio, strength and be able to roll with both my son’s. So off I went training at a different gym than where my son trained. I did that for awhile but I couldn’t get to the level of training that I was happy with. I wanted to be as good as my son. So I talked to him about his gym and joining him with his training. His response was “I dunno it’s kinda rough there” he was right. I was pushed further than I thought I could go. I would go into training thinking, ok don’t embarrass your son today, try to survive. Every session was exhausting, exciting, extremely educational. Every person I’ve met has been extremely polite, humble and caring. I am older than most of the guys I train with, actually I may be the oldest guy at the gym right now. I have these young guys and girls training me, coaching me and pushing me to be better. It’s actually fun to see a group of young men and women setting and exceeding their goals.

So my first reason to train Jiu Jitsu was so I wouldn’t get beat by my son. I still get beat… I didn’t factor into the equation he was going to get better too, now both my sons train. That’s not any better for me either but I’m lasting longer during our rolling sessions now at least; along the way Jiu Jitsu has introduced me to some of the best people I’ve met.

Now I train at Excel Jiu Jitsu for many reasons: I love watching both my boys be amazing men (even though I will pay for their progress), it’s what I love to do most, I enjoy Jiu Jitsu, it’s a great workout, its healthy, it’s a it’s a workout for your mind, body and soul, my best friends and family train at Excel Jiu Jitsu. Training at Excel under these coaches is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

When I first started I wanted to get into something that was different and change up my workout routine. I also used to smoke cigarettes and cigars daily and I knew if I did something like jiu jitsu it would keep me honest. It’s hard enough to breathe when rolling, but to do it with jacked up lungs… well I smoked my last cigarette/cigar in April of last year when I started and haven’t looked back. I’ve done the 450lb bench presses and the countless hours in the weight room, I’ve been through football training camps and I’ve competed in the Pac-10 with the USC’s and the Cal’s, and competed with some pretty awesome athletes….but NOTHING has ever pushed or challenged me like jiu jitsu! Especially at Excel JJ!

Rolling with guys like Charlie, Rey, Bubba, and Gabe make you really take a long look at yourself and makes me want to get better and be as comfortable on the mat as they are. Michio is a great teacher and you can tell with all his students. All his guys are technically sound. Excel Jiu JItsu provides a great training environment where EVERYBODY is super friendly and there to learn and get better. I’m proud to say I’m an Excel Jiu Jitsu guy!

Excel Jiu Jitsu offers WORLD-CLASS INSTRUCTORS in a FAMILY atmosphere. You will earn your stripes here, but you will have lots of fun and make close friends along the way. Professor Michio and his team of coaches will always challenge you to grow, but their sincere encouragement will also inspire you to keep pushing yourself.

I have trained at dozens of martial arts schools, but I call Excel home because it is the most EGO-FREE and POLITICS-FREE gym I have ever been to. If you want to learn the most-practical self defense system ever created, become a world-class competitor, or reach your fitness goals, Excel will give you all the support you need. The Fitness, Boxing, Yoga, and Judo classes are all excellent as well. You will never get bored here.

My name is Mathew Liebovitz, I am a teacher, martial artist, and I have been training with Professor Michio Grubbs for almost three years. My time at Excel Jiu-jitsu has been a fun rewarding experience where I have made lifelong friends, and have had the opportunity to train with local and world champions. The environment at Excel Jiu Jitsu is very family oriented, and I often have the opportunity to get to know the families of my training partners on more than just a superficial basis.

Not only is Excel Jiu Jitsu an excellent gym to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but to get in shape as well. I take Professor Michio’s strength and conditioning class every opportunity I get, and I have never been in better shape in my life (and that includes my amateur Thai Boxing career). I highly recommend Excel Jiu Jitsu if you want to learn self-defense, get in shape, or become a world champion.

I first started training with Michio nearly a decade ago. Having no BJJ experience and not knowing what to expect, I was nervous before my first class but it became immediately apparent to me I’d found a one of a kind school that provided a fun and friendly atmosphere to learn in. From that first class on, he’s been consistently helpful and supportive every step of the way. His attention to detail while instructing people of all ages and experience levels is second to none and there is always a group of students at Excel who are looking to help one another.
