Have another question?

How can I get started?

To get started, simply Contact us through our website or give us a call at (760) 726-2279. We’ll guide you through the process, answer any additional questions you may have, and help you schedule your first class. We look forward to welcoming you to Excel Jiu Jitsu!

What do I need to get started?

Good attitude, willingness to learn and work well with others. Bring your own Water Bottle (we provide high quality water filtration system), an extra dry shirt for after training, flip flops (no shoes on the mat and no bare feet off the mat). Wear Jiu Jitsu uniforms or clean, snug fitting shorts and shirts (so no fingers get caught in them).

What is Jiu Jitsu?

Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that focuses on ground fighting and submission holds. It emphasizes technique and leverage, allowing individuals to overcome larger opponents through skill and strategy.

Is Jiu-Jitsu suitable for beginners?

Absolutely! Our gym welcomes beginners, and our instructors and members are experienced in working with students of all levels. We offer weekly fundamental classes to help newcomers get started.

Who is teaching me?

All of our instructors and coaches are handpicked for their professionalism, knowledge, skills, and rapport with people. You can find their Bios and credentials under the Instructors list on our website. We also have many well trusted, advanced students that help to guide & mentor beginning BJJ practitioners in our program.  We are proud of our teaching staff and are excited to help you get to the next level.

How long does it take to get promoted?

We do our promotions based on criteria’s such as skills, performance and character, as well as attendance and time in service.  We use the IBJJF graduation system as our guideline. As a student, please come to the academy and focus on learning and improving.  Let the Instructors take care of the promotions. As a Martial Artist, we never ask for a promotion. Promotions come when they come.

What should I wear to a Jiu-Jitsu class?

For our Gi Jiu Jitsu Classes: A Gi is typically required. If this is your first time , we have loaner Gis for you to borrow. Comfortable athletic wear is recommended as a base layer.

For our No-Gi Jiu Jitsu Classes/MMA: Comfortable athletic shorts and shirt is recommended.

Are there age restrictions for classes?

We offer classes to suit all age ranges. Our Adults classes typically are restricted to ages 15 and older, our Kids Classes ages 7-15, and our Tiny Tuff ages 4-7.

How old do kids have to be to start in your program?

We have an excellent Kids 4-7yr old program that builds a foundation of confidence, passion and excitement.  We do accept 3 1/2 year olds in the program but it’s going to depend on their attention span and maturity.  The best thing to do is to try the Kids classes and see if it’s a good fit.

How many days a week should I train?

Train as much as much as your body and mind will allow. Everyone gets super excited in the beginning and some start off going super hard, but then it backfires and they need to take a break. The key is consistency. Start slow, maybe two-three times a week, then progressively work to upping the intensity. Consider this: learning Jiu Jitsu is a Marathon, not a sprint.
