I started my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) journey in 2009. Having no experience in Martial Arts or any kind of sports training for that matter, I found the Art of BJJ intriguing. It took me a little bit to get going but once I did, I fell in love with it. The fact that the workouts you get in BJJ are so different from conventional strength & conditioning methods I looked forward to trying something new and was up for the challenge.
Every time I step on the mat it’s like a new experience. The friendship, camaraderie and the bonding experience that is created through the tough, humbling and fun training is nothing short of awesome. I was fortunate that I was able to make the time to train so much the first three years that it has created a great foundation for me.
To this day, I continue my training with a careful balance of life, family, work and sports.
The biggest thing that I get out of Jiu Jitsu is team. At Excel Jiu Jitsu Oceanside, we have a nice blend of people from all walks of life that come together to train, share and socialize in friendship. As Academy Director, I get to greet people every day and welcome them into a positive environment of team spirit. I get a chance to work with people and possibly help them with situations that may arise. As I share my vision with Professor Michio and the other instructors of Excel Jiu Jitsu, we talk of Team Unity and Friendship, it’s an experience of memories that will last a lifetime…it’s the Excel Experience.

Steve Kozola’s passion and dedication took him from a young black belt in Taekwondo to a seasoned professional MMA fighter. Steve began his martial arts odyssey at the age of 12, achieving his black belt in taekwondo, which laid the foundation for his combat skills and discipline.
At 19, Steve ventured into the realm of mixed martial arts, quickly making a name for himself with an amateur record of 3-1. This early success paved the way for his professional debut at age 23. Throughout his professional career, Steve amassed a record of 9-4, with 8 of his 9 wins by knockout. His journey saw him competing in some of the most prestigious organizations in the sport, including LFA, PFL, and Bellator.
In 2020, Steve decided to hang up his gloves and embark on a new chapter. Turning his focus to Brazilian jiu-jitsu, he dedicated himself to mastering this art under the esteemed Gracie Humaitá banner. His commitment and skill were recognized in 2022 when he was awarded his black belt.
Today, Steve brings his wealth of experience and knowledge to our team as an MMA instructor. He is passionate about sharing his love for martial arts, teaching techniques honed in professional competition, and instilling the values of discipline, respect, and perseverance in his students.
